Our strict practices and thorough training ensures that we are able to achieve the highest quality product. Hinoki is known as a Japanese Cypress which represents Japan. It is admired for its natural beautiful shading. Hinoki has been used for Japanese buildings, baths and more since ancient times because it is resistant to humidity and insect damage. It is known for its` familiar but pleasant natural aroma. By dyeing this traditional Japanese material, it has been reborn into something fresh and new with a decorative vintage look.

Dyed wood (Irodori) has a distinct difference from regular painted wood.(Wood colored by coating pigment on the surface of wood with a brush). Thanks to our special dying methods, our final product is filled with beautiful colors without impeding the natural grains of the wood. Also, since this is specially dyed to penetrate the surface of the wood, even if you plane the surface several times the shades of colors are still visible. Its` "natural vintage look" is kept intact which is one of the biggest features for this product. For example, dyed wood can even be made into a texture which resembles worn out jeans.

The photo above shows the Irodori wood block cut in half. As you can see, the color is still visible at both cut ends.
※However the permeability is a bit different for each type of wood product.

In order to dye the products well, we use vacuum and pressure impregnation. To prevent the dye from dissipation, a few flame retardants are added as an extra measure.

The material for the Irodori is hinoki cypress and Japanese cedar. Hinoki is typically whitish so it is easily dyed well. Despite the use of the Irodori method, you can still enjoy its natural aromas.

Hinoki cypress and Japanese cedar are typical species in Japan and both of them have been used for building material for a long time. Now we dye these traditional materials and blow new life into them.

・The dye we use comes from a long-established manufacturer in Kyoto. It is usually used for dyeing clothes, so there are no side effects concerning health.
・Since there is a possibility that the dye may leach out, please do not put high temperature objects such as pots directly on the surface. If possible please prevent liquids spills. In case of such circumstances, please wipe immediately with a dry cloth.

・When cleaning, simply wipe with a dry cloth. Wiping with a damp or wet cloth may cause the dye to leach out a bit.
・Hinoki is a coniferous tree so it is easier to get damaged compared to hardwood like walnut or oak. During normal usage, the surface may be prone to minor scratches. This is normal and adds a natural aging decorative look.

・Since hinoki is a natural material, the shades and grain of each board are different so please enjoy these natural features.

Manufacturing Process

1.First, the freshly cut hinoki or cedar is air dried.
2.Then it is dried in a what is called a "kiln" (a furnace or oven for baking or drying)  until its moisture content drops to at least 15%.
3.All timber is weighed before the dye injection.
4.Add a bit of chemicals to dye and stir them until they are mixed properly.
5.The timber is then put into a vacuumed sealed tank. Dyes will be injected to them using pressure for better absorption.
6.All injected timber is weighed to insure that the dye have been injected properly.
7 .Injected timber is air dried.
8.Then once again it is dried in the kiln until the wood has the proper moisture content.
9.Urethane or Plane finish is applied depending on the customers` request.
